What we need, besides more knowledge, are better
instruments for testing these beasts. In the movie Das
Boot
there is an engine room scene where a crew member is
checking the operation of the diesel. He goes along the
engine opening a port on each cylinder and examines the
appearance of the jet of flame that erupts. I say we are
not schteping mit Heinrich yet.
-- Gavrik
Hagar sez : I agree with Gavrik ----we do need lots of knowledge ----BUT instruments ?
Every Human has been provided (by the Lord) with the finest instruments from birth.
They are fine for this application.
Gavrik and I have discussed the use of a Gasser timing light (strobe) for making sure that the advance is not
slack assing it. Gavrik has a timing light and he has ALL the skills needed for adapting a sonic probe.
For now we only use it for verifying advance NOT for timing the engine.
I am ashamed to say that engines used in those untersee boats were made in my hometown,.
In German " E " boats they used pyrometers close to exhaust valves. 60 cylinders Aircraft diesels.
3 X 20 cylinder. BIG gauge and a selector switch.
I worked on British Subs only ---and I did not notice make of engines.
Flame tuning by color has been used for many years---- read Mark Shepherd he may still
have sparkplugs with glass insulators . They were used for setting mixture on gassers.
BUT on a diesel ? IMHO I would rather have an OPACITY sensor.
You can NOT run a diesel too lean.
This is written mostly for Advanced or Senior Pump gang members ---but if you are a NEWBIE ?'
jump right in we do not redicule or bite. ----My CREDO is : NO question is too stupid
--NOT asking is a sin.
Hagar.
PS : Remember --in Hillbilly Tuning -- injectors MUST be done first then the rest.
Injector pressure affects injection point.
