  You are correct about the fueling screw.  Stay off full throttle and 
it won't matter, set it for 60mph tops and that's all you'll have!
  I'm wondering if it's possibly the fuel.  I've always gotten consistent 
mileage filling up here but one trip I filled up in Aberdeen or Seattle 
somewhere.  I didn't notice smoke since it was night but it seemed 
noticeably thick in headlights.  I had a LOT less power and made so 
bad of mileage that I ran out of fuel a little over a half hour from home!
Had to dump in a quart and a half of oil I just happened to have in back, 
so that I could make it the last few hunderd feet over the top of 
Blewett pass.  It was strictly that tank of fuel.  Who's to say there 
isn't a lot more of it or that it's some "improved," mandated diesel.
