Not a bad idea, but it would also roughly double the cost you currently pay
for fuel.
They do this in Europe, with a pile of subsidy, but it is done, and keeps
the economy out of the toilet to some extent, and the fuel costs lower as
well to the consumer. If you factor new veg oil prices into the biodiesel
equation, it cannot compete with crude, or the crushers would be going
24/7/365 turning out profit, which is why they exist after all. Right now,
it's linked to veg oil crush margins.
Same story for ethanol plants, has to be government fiddling to make it
work, otherwise the profit is not there.

The United States has the farmland, the sunshine and the technological
knowhow to become completely energy self-dependent growing fuel oil.  I
don't know why they don't.  It would create domestic jobs, improve the
economy, improve air quality and stop the need for many foreign wars and
American soldiers coming home in body bags.  Unlike mideastern oil which
will soon run out, this would be a renewable resource.
