Lightning is solar powered, in a round about way.. in that
the heat of the sun drives the weather systems.

The friction of wind moving builds up the static charge 
which is disapated in the spark you see when the voltage
overcomes the insulating properties of the  
air/ground/or whatever it ends up hitting!

While on the subject, where does the energy that causes lightning come from?  
Is it from plants moving the electrons? Static? Magnetic field of the earth?
