Yes, we have gotten used to it and some think it their birthright.


  The thing we all seem to keep forgetting is that the major "cost" we 
incur when paying for fuel is TAXES!!  Everything I've heard is that 
Europe's higher fuel prices are from higher taxation.  A good share 
of what we pay for fuel here is from taxes as well.  Of course if we 
look we can see the per gallon tax that's imposed federally and 
locally on fuel.  We don't see the taxes that are passed on from 
the oil companies either from direct taxes they pay or from fees 
or the myriad of paperwork they have to keep up to comply with 
cumbersome laws that only cost the consumer.  Face it, a lot 
of the laws don't really do any more than the previous laws except 
for cause more paperwork, manpower to handle it and raise costs, 
which are passed on.
  I don't think we'd complain as loudly if the cost of fuel was actually 
going up, it's when the high costs are from taxation and price gouging 
that we get irked.
