Yes, if it won't dissolve, it could only be pulled in in crystal form and should be filtered out, especially on an EFI engine. 
I suppose a carbed engine with no fuel filter could suck up some gas/sugar mixture, as long as the jets did not clog up and get 
it into the cylinders.

Or if poured down the throat of the carb, it could make a big mess inside the intake as it carmelized and broke down.
