Loren,
Could you clarify what you mean by this? Are you saying the factory did an
oops by installing the oil check hole too low so that merely filling to the
hole doesn't put enough oil in, or do you mean that there is a flip cover
that no owner bothers to lift and check the oil level? I don't know where
the oil check hole is but I should certainly check the level on my *new*
1991 TD Jetta 5 speed.
What is the best gear oil to put in there? Someone mentioned synthetic. I
have some Shell EP50 (non synthetic) that is very good stuff. Nice and
loose in the cold winter yet provides ultra low friction protection in the
summer. I used it in the rear differential in my supercharged V8 chevy
street rod with no trouble. Over common 90w gear oil it would increase fuel
economy in the VW transmission.
