[Vwdiesel] Genset RPM and Diesels

When VW went to the 5speed, it's pretty much a 4 speed with a different
end piece. It needs more oil. Somehow they missed the fact that the
level must be higher for the oil to stay in that end housing and lubricate
the 5th gears. If you use the "check" hole as your level, it's roughly
a half quart low. :-( Somewhere about A2 they raised the hole in
the casting and all was well again. If you measure the amount you
put into a drained tranny (2 quarts) then you'll be fine, just don't
check the level with that upper hole (lower hole is the drain.)
I think most here have gone to synthetic 90W. VERY thin, fixes
a lot of poor shifting problems, better mileage. I don't remember
which Redline product is best for it but until recently we haven't
had any around here so I've always used Amsoil since I can get
good pricing on it. Not as thin as Redline though but still makes
a big difference.
