Here goes... H2 embrittlement
In metallic crystalline structures, think of a plate of marbles. All the
marbles line up in neat rows of atoms. Now picture layer upon layer of
the atoms. One layer easily glides along the surface of the next layer.
-> Metal bends easily and doesn't break.
Now, toss in a H atom.
The metal lattice structure basically stays the same, but now the H atom
sits in-between the layers of metal atoms. Think of a door stop. One
layer can no longer easily slide along the other layers.
-> The metal is much harder to bend, and will eventually break as the
crystal lattice lets go.
Does that answer the question?

Hagar zes thank you Gary Bangs and James Hansen. -------- I will NOT pretend that I fully
understand ------- BUT at least I finally got some answers.
And I did wind up at 10 000 feet hanging from that bolt ----TOTALLY helpless-- and
still going up. -----It took place over Harrison Lake BC ---and way down there I could see
Harrison Hotsprings Hotel. -----I was on floats so the "AIRPORT" was a big one.
Trouble was I did NOT know how to land without power. ----or ellse I would have cut engine.
Those Bensen Gyrocopters were like a Dandy Lion seed in updrafts. NO control on
collective pitch.
Bob Bambrick from Galiano Island was there as a chase boat.------safety just in case.
Why this ? well James Hansen is one of the flyboys.
Hagar.
PS : Bob Bambrick has a Bensen.
