Hard to say exactly, but the easy way is to go by the mfg. gear oil recommendation.  If they say GL-4 (only) then the 
transmission is probably not GL-5-safe.  If it says GL-4 or GL-5, then it is, for example my Toyota 4Runner 5-speed is speced 
for GL-4 or GL-5 oil (and it does work better w/ GL-5, I've run both).  Some transmissions are spec'ed to use ATF or motor oil, 
so whatever the mfg. recommends is probably the best bet.

In any event, GL-4 just works better for a manual transmission application (at least those designed to use gear oils), that is 
what it was designed for.
