Vwdiesel Digest, Vol 19, Issue 87Hi Paul,

SOME brands of GL-5 oils will attack the syncros but the real reason to use a GL-4 oil in a manual tranny is the amount of EP addatives in GL-5 oil reduces the syncros ability to syncronize the shift.

I don't know if this is an "old wives tale", but I
think I read somewhere that the additives in GL-5
attack the (bronze???) synchronizers in the tranny????
