My 79 rabbit didn't give much warning. You have to remember this was back in
1986 I think, I'm young, dumb and single driving back to the base from an
awesome weekend in the mountains of south western Virginia. Cruising along
doing 60mph when the engine starts to make a loud noise like the exhaust
broke off at the flex pipe, which it has done several times before, then
before I knew it, it just got super loud and died. That is when I pulled
over to see antifreeze coming out of the block, my water pump knocked off
the block and the connecting rod sticking out.

Then you could always just torque to spec plus a couple pounds for
wrench error and go at that. I've never had one come loose nor has
a friend's shop who's done a bunch more than I. A drop of Loctite would
suffice if you're that paranoid about it too.
I'd suspect that most make a rod knock long enough to shut them down
before they throw one through the case.
SIster's friend's Camaro threw one or two through the pan. I warned her
about it 3 weeks before it happened. She just kept driving it until it
happened.
