If you're a fixer, then pop the brush holder/regulator out and have a look.
It's the oval thing held on with two screws on the back of the alternator.
If the rotor turns, and the brushes contact the slip rings, a bosch will
charge 13.5-14v. With age, the brushes wear, get cockeyed in the holder.
Aside from grounds and connections, that's the usual spot to wear.
You can replace the brushes or get another assembly, your call. I have yet
to see a blown regulator, it's usually brushes or the internal connection
that the brush holder makes with the chassis (you'll see it when you pull it
out) That coonnection gets a higher resistance over time, and defeats the
regulators regulatory power.

My alternator doesn't seem to be charging, after several days the battery
won't start the
my 91 jetta td, i've swapped out several battery cables, changed a battery,
thought i found 12+ vlt
coming from the alternator though still the battery doesn't charge. This alt
has a heavy cable which goes to the starter then from the starter to the
positive side of the batt. It also has a smaller gauge
wire, excitor?, should this show 12 volts. I don't currently have a manual
so please forgive
any improper term here. BTW the dash light does go out after first start up.
I expect i will need to see my mech for a more acurate charging
determination though i had
thought an aging ground was the culprit
