sorry got it mixed up... of course the thing fits.
If it's from Canada, it will be a 1.9td most likely. they fit, I know, I
did one....

He may as well change trannies to the A1 then. If he has the blown tranny,
he can cannibalize it for the parts he needs to install... mounts and such.
Might have to fab one bracket to put the early tranny in a late car. going
the other way is fine (new to old) but the mount configuration of the new
one didn't exist when the old one was made, and there is one goofy one on
the rear in the golf. I can't remember if the alloy bracket can be removed
and bolted on an early case or not, sorry.... but it could be fabbed up if
he's handy in the shop at any rate.

My 97 Golf td (Canadian version) has poor ratios to start with, I figure
they couldnt get any worse... but he will find the ratios very similar
between the stock golf and the caddy transmissions. Highway speed is around
2700rpm, much too fast for the torquey 1.9. It works, but economy really
suffers at the higher rpms in a 1.9 compared to a 1.6 I have found.
Ideally, in a golf especially, if he could find a tranny from an early tdi,
say a 96,97 Passat, the ratios would be beautiful, and it would be a direct
bolt in. A 1.9td has plenty of power at the lower rpm to haul around a golf.
Power is there, but the economy really sucks at 65mph+ and if he needs a
passing gear, there is always fourth. I've been watching for one for my
golf.

Good. I might have a home for the '81 p.u. then. A friend of my
neighbor stopped by and wants just the body and the 5 speed. He had
bought a Canadian spec diesel golf with a blown tranny and was told that
it took a different tranny then a U.S. spec Golf. He isn't sure what
the displacement is, but thinks it is a 1.9. Hope he buys it. I need
the money for the diesel Samuri.
