Short answer, because I have to make some money for my employer,
is because the heavier weight oil tended to be associated with
sticking rings, ONLY on VW diesel engines.
When checking Norm's database, it was found that all instances of
stuck rings on VW diesels (sample size was modest),
the owner was either using 40 weight or heavier straight weight,
or a somethingW-50 oil, or substantially extended change intervals.
I don't run extended change intervals.
I've personally had a half dozen instances of stuck rings, on
higher mileage VW diesels. Changing to 30 weight, and using
10W30 oil in winter has correlated with not having any instances
of stuck rings (your mileage may vary).
