I have exactly the same project on my to-do list.  I have a 20 kW DC
generator that outputs 50 VDC at 400 amperes when spun at 1800 RPM.  Huge
and weighs about 1200+ pounds. You should see the massive commutator and
brush gear on this beast.  Three rows of big brushes!  I figure it will make
an excellent welder.  I want to weld the big tower for my wind turbine next
summer.  I have a NA 1.6 VW I can use, or a 4 cyl. diesel not yet pulled
from a Nissan car in my yard that is supposedly a bit larger in displacement
than the VW engine.

Way too many projects, running out of time.
