[Vwdiesel] No glow ....

Yes, you are correct, the LED is driven from the relay, but does not necessarily
indicate when there is power to the GP busbar. If you listen, you will hear the relay
stay on several seconds after the LED goes out. There is also power to the GP bus
during cranking. Of course, the GP fuse could be gone, and the LED won't tell you
that...
And you are correct, grounding the temp sender wire will keep the GPs from turning
on, but can also cause a malfunction on some relays I've found. They can
sometimes buzz loudly when this happens. You can also leave the temp wire off, but
not grounded, which will force the relay into the longest cycle mode (about 45
seconds), which you can choose to interrupt by starting when you wish. Or you can
do as I plan to, which is to add a resistor to give a short cycle even when the engine
is hot. I just wired the relay into my '88 Vanagon (previously gas) so spent a long time
studying the circuits.
Also, both Bosch and Beru make an 'upgrade' relay which stays on after the engine
is running for a short period to reduce cold start emissions. Your AAZ may already
have this perhaps, I don't know if VW ever used them. I'd like to find this relay and
give it a try someday, supposed to be a direct fit...
