[Vwdiesel] Spring Notes (The Coil)

Well, the terminology is confusing.
think in terms of spring rate.
Rate is pounds of force needed to compress the spring one more inch at ride
height, or the length the spring is at at ride height...
This is influenced by the size of the coil and number of turns and the
radius of the turns.
A dual rate spring will have one end that has coils farther apart at one
end, and closer together, or on a smaller radius. The end with more turns
takes up the small bumps, the farther apart end is for bigger stuff.
That better?

James I see you posted that a 'softer' spring wears faster...
Is that right? Or are you referring to a weaker spring with less torsion
resistance and hence more twisting... whilst a spring that is softer
because it has more turns(coils) say twice the # of coils of the same
cross-sectional area means less twist per coil for the same overall spring
travel?
Or am I more confused than I believe ;o)?
On another note perhaps we can get more data points for these springs by
taking 3 readings, say; unloaded and add two known weights over the rear
axle area; for example the wife and then the wife and the mother-in-law Ah
we must never inquire about a lady's weight so it'll have to be kegs of
beer and sacks of potatoes...
