A couple of other thoughts.  If the "cooler" were only a "warmer", wouldn't 
VW have installed it on every vehicle and engine, as all require oil warming to 
the same degree?  Instead, the same engine fitted in a heavier chassis will 
get the cooler, when in the lighter chassis it won't.  Engines that had higher 
temp swings always got one, and as the temp demands increased, they were 
fitted with larger and larger (more expensive to manufacture) units.  When looking 
at the stock coolers, with regard to which engines were fitted with coolers 
and which sizes were used it only seems to make any logical sense when viewed as 
a cooler.

As I mentioned, I have not done testing myself, and would love more info from 
those that have gauges.  I have several electric water temp gauges and so at 
some point will install several senders with a switch to switch between them.
