We always pulled the bumper and drilled a couple of holes in the bumper 
mounts to bolt the tow bar brackets to.  That way we were only out a few 
really big bolts and it wasn't going anywhere but where we towed it. 

Hauled a Rabbit, several Volvos and a Mercedes that way.  Held up 
despite numerous dry-rotted tire blow-outs.  One of those things we 
really should have checked before we left....
