[Vwdiesel] Timer options

At least around here, there are plenty of options as to timers. I've seen
some pretty wicked Christmas tree light octopuses hooked up to a timer...
I have a couple timers here that are for block heaters.
At -40, they stay tied up all night however. With ON at 5:00am, the rate of
heat loss is too great to be of much benefit on early cars. Later cars with
the belly pan underneath makes a significant difference.
Stock 400 watt block heater costs around 5 cents per hour to operate.
Good timer is 30 bucks.
So break-even on capital cost is 600 hours the timer has to be calling for
OFF rather than letting it run.
Andrew has a good method. Ever forget to turn it on Andrew? You are
required to remember to turn it on BEFORE you have had the morning coffee
after all.... kind of a dicey thing for me :-) I'd have to have a banner
strung across the kitchen to remind myself...

OK with all the talk about block heaters my question is would an inside
light timer, like the ones that you use to put on your Christmas tree
lights, or lights inside your house to make it look like your home, but your
not, would one of those timers be strong enough to put on the block heater?
If not then what would work. I'm not thrilled with going outside at 5 am to
plug the heater in when it is super cold out.
