[Vwdiesel] Altitude compensation

Now that you mentioned smell, I just thought of something.
I hardly ever use gas, except for the race thing, so the other day at the
track, I spilled some of the new shell premium V power stuff on my hands. I
noticed a different smell--- so I sniffs, and I'll be damned, but that was
mothballs. I'll wager that they are using P-dichlorobenzene or some very
close relative as an oxidizer. Old racer trick (three mothballs to a tank
of fuel) goes mainstream.
Anyone else notice this?

My work van has 11:1 domed pistons with the "big" (small block) heads.
I run regular (87 octane) at about 10BTDC. I've run as high as 14BTDC and
now need to check it as it's rattling since the gas has changed smell a few
months back. Either the points block has worn and advanced the timing
or the fuel's taken a step down on real world octane ratings.
Years ago I put together two different 10.25:1 327s. One .040 over and
both ran fine on 87. Acidentally put together a Honda 1200 with probably
somewhere around 12:1. Never even pinged but blew the ring lands out of
two of the pistons!
Hagar, I'd wait until the tank's nearly empty and put in 4 or 5 gallons,
try
it and see. If it does fine, then fine. If not, fill up with premium and
tada!
Loren
