Not an urban legend, still done actually.
The cheapass way to make race fuel for years has been to take premium, add
three mothballs to five gallons, and some toluene.
The VP race gas is really similar, toluene, plus nitromethane or other
oxidizers to get a faster burn with MON ratings over 100, and vapor pressure
in the neighborhood that would vaporize easily at your saturday night race
track.
I've never done it, but do know some that do with success.
What I was referring to was... I have a pretty good nose. I smell mothballs
in Shell V power premium fuel that I bought at the local gas station prior
to our first local race two weeks ago (we just built a new track). I now
smell mothballs working under the hood on my stock car as well. It's there,
the smell is pretty much unmistakeable.
To my knowledge, that's a not a common additive to be using in commercial
fuels. I just started seeing shell V power at the pump this summer on
holidays, so figured I would try it, seeing as how the local shell bulk
distributor is one of my car sponsors and all....

James,
I've known that urban legend since I was young but have never researched it
or tried it. Can you tell us more about adding mothballs to gasoline? What
does it do for the engine? Does it make more power, if so, how? What do
you mean "goes mainstream"?
