Another data bit:  The 1.8, type RV, Digifant II (knock sensor 
equipped) now in the Vanagon (formerly in the '89 Jetta) has 10:1 
compression and unleaded 87 is called for it by VW.  As an aside and 
speaking of smileage, it gives 24-26 mpg (128 oz. gal.) pushing the 
Vanagon loaded for work (800 lbs. of equipment) on I-5 at 65 mph!
