Isn't there a way to get more milage by setting the Injection Pump dial
indication a little higher or lower than what is shown in the Bentley?
Resulting in no damage to the pump or engine, of course.

To a point. More advance gets longer burn times, higher cylinder pressures,
and higher EGT's, hence more power, and efficiency due to more work
available from the same fuel.... to a point where things will start to melt.
EGT gauge is invaluable, and if you want to go higher, you can, but your
driving style can't change or you can melt it by just driving a tad harder
when it's set to run at the ragged edge. You won't damage the pump, but
pistons and heads can melt.
