You need to check out the archives for "hillbilly tuning" by Hagar,
et.al:
It would be difficult in a single post to cover all the information this
group has discussed over the last year or so concerning timing and
tuning.  
Briefly, the answer is yes with a cost in power. Not only the timing is
involved but the fuel/air screw as well.  Check out the archives- search
hillbilly tuning and you will get all the information and opinion you
could possibly hope for!

Isn't there a way to get more milage by setting the Injection Pump dial 
indication a little higher or lower than what is shown in the Bentley? 
Resulting in no damage to the pump or engine, of course.
