[Vwdiesel] Timing

 Hey Ferg,

After 2 years hillbilly tuning, I put a dial indicator on the pump just to see where she ended up: one point one millimeters before TDC. This car is my daily driver used mostly for high speed operation. As Hagar says, this timing is for my car only (91 Jetta 1.6 N/A); another may be different. My 81 pick up (1.6 N/A) finds this timing (1.1 mm) to be too far advanced. For the pick up I ended up at one point oh. A good indicator of timing accuracy for any given engine: on a cool morning - say about 20 degrees F - if your motor starts and runs well without pulling out the advance knob, then you are probably a bit too advanced. This is my experience.
As for timing advance: this is controled by pump internal pressure which goes up with pump RPM to a certain point & is then relieved by spring plunger like an oil pump. The mechanical pumps work this way; I really have no knowledge of the TDI or common rail systems.
Hope this gives you a starting point to play with.

Ahah! So they use an internal target and transducer to track the advance?
OH so much to learn. May the force be with me. Ferg
