Come on Hagar you're getting more like 'The Bosh' every day...
No not like Hitler's mates;
But Bosh the pump people.... I tried asking them for a simple figure for
the TD pump timing. "Oh no" they cried "that's proprietary information"
Surely you can give me a figure say 0.88mm or 1 mm? I don't want a lesson
on servicing... Even tried the VW dealership and they claimed to have lost
their Quantum service manuals when they took over the franchise!! Another
Bosh authorised service garage said he would give me the information but
only as part of a service/tune-up.
That's how I found the world of the VW forums and I think it was Nate and
Loren who first gave me advice.
So if you're feeling well enough get out under Bondo's bonnet (ahhh hood)
and take a gauge reading.
My Quantum is set at the standard 1mm. Spaceship leaned out slightly and
the cam aligned with feeler gauges. It had been adjusted by PO or his PO to:
cam out by 1.5 flywheel teeth, pump thrust only 0.88mm
Initial mileage 35 town to 45 interstate.
After adjustments 40 town and about 50 interstate. Inspired by Cummins LDA
site. Played with Spaceship and found it could vary (just by rotating
diaphragm) from sluggish to tree climber. Eventually settled for slightly
leaner than standard. Mileage went up to 45 town and 60 interstate
### A 30% improvement overall ###
[divide by 1.2 to get wine gallons ;o]
Last tank was 618 miles and gave 52mpg 2/3 town driving. I've been using
5% Canola. for a while Car is being retired at end of month for rebuild and
my Worcester sauce one comes to life for the next year or so.
