I too find cruise control keeps me more alert and observant while driving long distances.  Since your attention is not focused 
on the speedometer all the time you can keep your eyes on the road more.  Also keeps the speed at the speed limit to avoid 
driving too fast with the issues that brings up.  Adding the cruise control to my '82 pickup was a big win in my book:
