I've posted some pics of my now dismantled Garrett T3 turbo here:

For those who've never had one apart, they might be interesting... this was
a first for me. For the turbo experts, I'd appreciate any feedback on the
condition of this thing. The grating sound on shutdown which caused so
much alarm was actually coked oil on the turbine shaft and beneath the
heat shield, not compressor against the housing like I thought - they are
pristine, no sign of contact. The hot side bearing looks well worn, the other
not so bad, and the shaft is a bit worn. Thrust bearing doesn't look too bad.
But the piston rings were leaking at both ends, considerable oil in both
housings. The compressor end ring is housed in aluminum - do I need to
worry about this bore being worn? Do the rings fail once the bearings allow
too much play? I'm hoping to get a basic rebuild kit and put it back
together. Anything else I should be concerned about?

Thanks for all the tips so far!
