Rod,

The exhaust note through a truck muffler is not a problem at all.  The metal
casing of the engine, particularly the head and upper portion of the
cylinder sleeve emits a mechanical racket that is deafening.  The air intake
noise is also severe but can be tamed with a suitable silencer.  Water
cooled diesels are generally quieter than air cooled models because the
water jacket absorbs some of the noise.  If I dug a hole and placed the
entire engine in it underground that would make it quiet.
