You bet.  They typical "gas" tach works off the ignition coil pulses.  You get 2, 3, or 4 pulses per revolution on a 4, 6, and 8 
cly. engine.  On a diesel (at least a mechanically injected one) there is no ignition system, no coil, no handy electrical 
pulses to feed into a tach.  More info on my diesel tach page:
