used-car prices, and they say $1375 retail for a '91 Jetta diesel, $1500 for
a '92--now, that would be within my budget. On the other hand, here's
someone in Puyallup, WA, who's asking $2K for an '81 A1 Jetta diesel w/273K:

Is the NADA booklet behind the curve (I hope not!), or is the guy in
Puyallup asking too much?<<
Both the NADA and Kelly Blue Books are available online, and
area-specific. IIRC, the url's are www.nadaguides.com and www.kbb.com.
Over the years, prices for used VW Diesels have fluctuated quite a
bit depending on gasoline prices. When gas goes up, used VWD's go for
whatever someone is willing to pay for them. I paid about $1250 for a '92
ECO about 3 years ago, when gas was fairly cheap, and recently saw one go on
Ebay for over $4k- which was in the ballpark for early TDI's 3 years ago.
Given the current market situation, heeding caveat emptor would be well
wise, as some owners might be tempted to unload problems at a profit.
Also, bear in mind that the ECO models came equipped with catalytic
converters, which the state may or may not be aware of. This may bear on
future inspections and conversions, as replacement converters aren't cheap.
