I think those prices were accurate before the price of fuel went up recently.
Last week a diesel jetta A2 went for $2700 on EBay.

Just went to the public library and looked over the NADA booklet of 
used-car prices, and they say $1375 retail for a '91 Jetta diesel, 
$1500 for a '92--now, that would be within my budget. On the other 
hand, here's someone in Puyallup, WA, who's asking $2K for an '81 A1 
Jetta diesel w/273K:
