When my 4KQ was totaled (for a fender, door and lower control arm)
they said they would pay it off for $2100. I literally laughed in her ear
and said she was NUTS! She assured me that was the market value
of the car. I assured her I'd JUST bought the car for $2500 knowing full
well I may have to dump $1000 into it for a new clutch and/or transmission
plus other undiscovered repairs. It was bought sight unseen for that price!
She countered that they COULD do a market evaluation as SOME cars
have slightly higher values in SOME areas. I said "darn right you will.
It came back something over $4300! I still bought it back, fixed it
partially
myself, partially the body shop and still put $1000 back in my pocket.
All practicality considered I should have just taken the money but it
was just too nice of a car to let it go to the scrap heap! Prettiest red
Quattro I've seen (until my son canned up the rear!) ;-(
