My first car was crashed is why I got the '62 beetle. I didn't settle and I don't think you do either. I was married then, too & had to get to work. It just made sense to go with effiency over extravagance. And I find a lot of old stuff is better than the newer stuff. Half the bells and whistles on new cars don't work after a few years, which would annoy the crap out of me. Our old Rabbits & Jettas have a lot less to bust, but everything there works.
Man, they've selling heated steering wheels now. And BMW calls you in your car to schedule service!
You think we're getting a little detached from reality?

Why is it we could see through the hype, while so many bought it hook, line
and sinker?
Maybe a quality-quantity choice made unconsciously years ago.
Is having a lot of mediocrity better than having a small amount of
perfection?
If a little is good, a lot is better; this what we are being sold every day
on TV, in magazines, advertising, movies. GET MORE. I bought it, too, having
grown up American - until I bought a rat '62 Beetle as a second car.

Having grown up with nothing you'd ever call "extra" money, on an orchard
with a nice shop, nobody my age around, town a mile or so away and in a
family that was "cheap." I'm actually one of the more "extravagant" ones
in the family! Didn't have much TO waste, no money to buy something to
waste and a reasonable amount of space to put "stuff" on. As I've gotten
to where I'm not broke every day I've found that some/many things are
certainly worth waiting a little longer for if you can get a better VALUE!
My first tape deck was Yamaha's second of the line. I was married by
then and "settled" for it because they were a couple years out of production
by then and this one came up for half price. I settled but for something
VERY good. I do most of the same for much that I buy.
Heck, when I was in high school I had (still have) a '66 Mustang. I wanted

a 6 for better mileage. I didn't really get it so I have a turbo to someday
add
to it for efficiency purposes. Those that know the Ford 200 6 know what a
crappy intake it has molded to the head. I whined and thought of putting
a diesel in it back then and gas was barely $.75/gallon. Just money down
the drain. So I drove my Honda 350 as much as I could, making 50+mpg.
Much better than the Yamaha 750's 40 or so mpg.
I finally got a Rabbit and then I could haul 4 people, not get wet, carry
luggage or groceries, stay warm and STILL get 40+mpg. I was HAPPY!
Don't ride the bikes much at all since.
