[Vwdiesel] 1st oil change after rebuild?

I'm not going to switch over to synthetic until I have 10k miles on my
rebuilt engine. Heck I had to go back into it after the first rebuild at 5k
and the cylinders still had a nice hone on them. I did change out the oil at
500 miles and then again at 2k miles and sticking to that for now since my
oil gets black really fast. I guess I need to turn down my fuel some, but
since I opened my exhaust I did notice the smoke went down a good bit. Maybe
it is running more efficiently?????

  I wouldn't even consider going to synthetic yet.  Most of the engines 
I've rebuilt (diesel VWs anyway) take until around 7K miles until I feel 
they are completely broken in or rings fully seated.  That's when I no 
longer get in the car one day and realize it has more power, zip, is a 
little smoother or makes progressively better mileage.
