 AFIK the early diesel and comparable (4 into 2) gas manifold and 
downpipeis the best breathing manifold.  The "toilet bowl" that breathes 
best had the divider in it.  I understand that some don't, gassers I think.
  I remember an OLD EC article for gas performance said to replace the 
bowl with the 4 into 2 manifold and downpipe.
