Sure:

A source of 3 cylinder tdi's salvaged out of Lupos would be great.
Get that, then let the projects begin...

With the 3cyl tdi weight, it would be a good candidate for a rear engine
car, as it's not too heavy, and has enough torque that it would get you
around in traffic nicely.
Get all you can up front, battery, rad, etc. BTW the front grills are
for vent air to the passenger space. Better place for the rad would be
under the car, in front of the tranny- the Ghia had room for the gas
heater/fire starter just in front of the transmission- I have an oil
cooler there in mine, but there should be enough room for a custom rad,
such as an aluminum race car rad with electric fans and ducting.

With a lighter motor such as the 3 cyl, it should work pretty good.

mikitka had forwarded this to Loren, who sent it to me:

power to weight is pretty good.

Speaking of torque, a buddy found me a 6.6 duramax for reasonable price,
I'm really tempted to build a cobra with a chipped Isuzu-Duramax
engine. really really tempted.

I would think it would make an acceptable ride.
:-)
And diesel too.
