I had an '86 jetta (1.6) that routinely got mid to upper 40's all in-city
traffic. Similar economy going 75-80mph. If I took it easy going 60-65 I would
see over 50 mpg. Odometer matched the mile markers on the freeway. What
surprised me was that it had bad compression on 3 out of four with 290,000+ miles
on it. I did notice that I would lose 10% fuel economy buying diesel from
certain stations as opposed to others. I also noticed that if I drove for
performance as opposed to economy (later shifts, heavier foot, not planning ahead
well) I could lose 15%.
