I had an '86 jetta (1.6) that routinely got mid to upper 40's all in-city 
traffic.  Similar economy going 75-80mph.  If I took it easy going 60-65 I would 
see over 50 mpg.  Odometer matched the mile markers on the freeway.  What 
surprised me was that it had bad compression on 3 out of four with 290,000+ miles 
on it.  I did notice that I would lose 10% fuel economy buying diesel from 
certain stations as opposed to others.  I also noticed that if I drove for 
performance as opposed to economy (later shifts, heavier foot, not planning ahead 
well) I could lose 15%.
