[Vwdiesel] Rust buckets

This car when I bought it last year looked 'presentable'  For the price it 
was a giveaway. I knew the rear wheel arches were a little rusty; but I 
never looked under the car which would have shown one big iron oxide 
crystal. (It was raining and muddy :)
The black region is a combination of plastic sheathing and bitumin undeseal. 
All the underneath is rusty if its still there!!
Best parts.. Although it is the oldest of the 3 diesels a non hydraulic '85' 
; the engine has only done 105,000 miles. This looks genuine because the 
engine starts well and burns no oil. Doors are good as is roof lining. Hood 
was perfect until I locked up brakes on some ice and thumped it. Amazingly 
strut housings are rust free; else the car would just be resting on its 
belly right now. Not easy to jack up as sills are like paper. Although the 
millionaire PO lives officialy 100miles from the sea he must have spent a 
lot of time at the seaside :o) This catestrophic failure of the rear slave 
cylinder has just brought to my attention the state of the rust. I already 
knew the back of the vehicle between the spare wheel and behind the rear 
bumper has 'dissolved' and the outer skins are just dangling. These brakes 
(now repaired) actually stop the car better than any of my 5 previous 
(Quantum) vehicles. I shall certainly save the brake pads/discs/servo for 
one of my other 'Q's!

No regrets... best part of a years driving and all those valuable spares.
