  Well, not quite but they ARE $10 on ebay, however they make it up
with generally a $15 shipping charge on such a light item.  :-P
  Although they're easily accurate to 1/100th mm, most of us aren't!  
;-)  It IS difficult to hold steady and get good repeatability using any 
caliper as a depth gauge in most real world instances.  
  As you said it makes sense to get the adapter and a dial gauge.  
In reality it's paid for about the second time you use it vs paying a 
shop to do it.  If you take into consideration how often shops screw 
things up doing such a simple task, it's MORE than paid for the 
FIRST time you use it!  :-)
