I just spoke to a friend of mine who works for VW, and he gave me some interesting information about VW's 2007 line-up:

a.. The A4 Golf and Jetta will make a comeback as 2007 models, sold as the CitiGolf and CitiJetta, which will be bare-bones, decontented versions designed to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio. These cars will come equipped with the ancient, iron-block 2.0 litre gas engine as their only power plant. These cars will sell in the range of $15 000.00 CAD, or $12 500.00 USD (VW already sells previous-generation cars under different names in many third-world markets, e.g., the Santana 3000 in Brazil, the CitiGolf in South Africa, and the A2 Jetta in China).
b.. The 2007 A5 Rabbit will be offered with the 2.5L 5-cylinder engine only. No diesel offered, at least until 2008.
c.. No diesels will be imported by VW after November 2006. There will be no 2007 model-year diesels, due to the upcoming changes to the EPA emissions standards and phase-in of ULSD. 2008 will be a different story, however.
d.. In 2008, the entire VW line-up will be offered with diesels, including the Passat, Touareg, and the upcoming DCX/VW joint-venture minivan.
e.. Many dealers in Canada, where 70% of their sales volume is diesel-powered, are worried that 2007 is going to be a miserable sales year. To compensate, VW is increasing production of TDI Jettas and Golfs to build up a stockpile of inventory for fall 2006, which is the same tactic they used for the 2005 Passat TDIs.

Looking forward to 2008!
