I side with William in that what you get ain't a whole lot.
My parents 04 Passat TDI gets 65mpg imperial without any special effort, 
combined city and highway.  There is room for people and stuff, monster 
trunk, etc.

Therre was a group that drove them across Canada when they were first 
out- they topped out at 80mpg in the prairies, and not quite half that 
in the mountains.  I might be wrong, since I'm just going from memory...

At least the smart is a clean burning diesel, not some electric hybrid 
abortion, or worse yet, an electric car.

Europe was supposed to be getting a smartfor4.  Any out in Europe yet?
