Sure, it gives me an opportunity to Google away my curiousity. I don't
assuem that others can read my mind, but understand how easy it is to find out what
an ac ronym stands for. BTW what does VW stand for? AFAIK it Very Weird.
VNT is an accronym for Variable Nozzle Turbine. A similar acronym meaning
functionally the same thing would be VGT Variable Geometry Turbine. A VNT has a
series of vanes radiating around the turbine. Those vanes are all attached to
a gear that allows their angle to be adjusted to direct the air either
agressively at the turbine or free flowing. They are un-wastegated and boost control
is achieved solely by the angle of the vanes in relation to the turbine.
There are two significant benefits over regular turbos. Due to the unwastegated
situation all of the exhaust gases pass through the turbine and so they are
more efficient as far as exhaust heat recovery. Due to the ability to adjust
the vane angle the turbo lag is virtually eliminated with maximum boost occuring
in the very low rpm ranges, yet also they can be more free-flowing than very
large turbos as well in the upper rpms. The downside to retrofitting them to
older engines is the vane control system as it is not merely boost dependent.
