[Vwdiesel] Does this idea make me a crack smoker? (alternator mounting)

Hey all-

Workin' on one of the '81 Rabbits tonight. I was
hoping to remove the A/C compressor bracket and
install the no-A/C alternator bracket and alternator
so I can get the water pump hooked up.

It didn't take me too long to find that there are one
or two bracket bolts hidden underneath the injection
pump, necessitating it's removal.

So, I decided, well, I'll just install the A/C pump
without hooking any of the rest of it, and call it
good.

It appears that both of the old A/C pump bolts have
broken, with most of the bolt inside the bracket. So,
now I really need to remove the bracket either way.
Crud.

What I was wondering about is, could I just install
the alternator in the position that it would be in if
there were an A/C pump, and get a really long belt to
drive it?

I know that I'd need the body of an alternator made to
work in that position so it's adjustor would work. I
also know that I'd need the longer "snout" so the
pulleys would line up. However, all that is easily
accomplished with an impact gun and swap of pulleys.

Thoughts? Could that work? I'm mostly looking for
expediency.

Thanks,

David
