Hi William;
I ran a 2.5 inch straight pipe on a 1.6 diesel in an 81 VW pickup
that had a Jetta turbo set up on it. That was 2.5 in. from the yoke on the
exhaust manifold to the rear and didn't find it objectionable at all. On an
NA setup I run a 2 inch from a decent exhaust manifold with a 12 inch turbo
style muffler and it is great. I don't believe you will get much than a mile
per gallon improvement in mileage but you should see an increase in power.
The difference between 45 and 46 miles per gallon in dollars is only about
15 bucks a year if you run 10,000 miles a year so you would have to do it
for the power if you are thinking positive. Make sure your pump timing is
correct and that you set your idle speed screw according to the Bentley
instructions. You wouldn't think so but the idle speed setting does lots
more to the pump than just setting idle speed.

I am more infested in what improvement occurs in MPG than noise, if the
noise is low enough to be legal. Also, what various mufflers have on MPG
which is the main reason most of us, I think, are attracted to diesels.
