It is my understanding that some cars will operate more efficiently with some back pressure & others will operate more efficiently with out any back pressure. I once had a 2 cylinder Panhard that only got 30 MPG which essentially had a straight pipe & straight thru muffler. I was told if I would get the factory Panhard exhaust system that had the proper back pressure engineered in I would get 40+ MPG, but the system which was very expensive was no longer available. I am not an automotive engineer, only one who has had a lifelong interest in cars (& I am almost 73 years old), especially cars that got high MPG. I have a '81 Dasher diesel station wagon I am gradually restoring plus a Dasher diesel wagon parts car. I also have a '81 Rabbit diesel 4 door with A/C plus a Rabbit diesel parts car which I may fix up or may sell. All are Calif. no rust cars that otherwise need a lot of help. All could be restored with less effort than rust belt rust buckets.
