[Vwdiesel] timing advance

I think I set the timing on my 85 1.6na with the advance pulled out.
I set it to .040 on the dial.  It starts with the advance out when
cold and needs it out unless it is fully warmed up, and even starts
better with it out then.  It runs good and doesn't smoke.  What I want
to know if how much it is off?  The Bentley says the advance is 5
degrees, how does this correlate to the dial indicator settings?  I
read that .034 is for good mileage and .039 for power and AC (I have
AC).  I checked mileage and got 32.5 all short trip, not bad, I got 35
around town before I changed the head gasket last week.  I can check
it soon when it is cool but thot I'd ask someone who might have
checked how much the advance is.
