[Vwdiesel] OT Quattro no start 3 hours away

first check that the distributor is turning.  no shit.
THis happened to me years ago on Sheila's car; an 82 gas (gasp!) Jetta.
I changed damn near everything except the spare tire, and wound up 
discovering that the crank sheared off the T-belt teeth, and wasn't 
turning the distributor. (non-interference engine)

The fuel pump would cycle, stop, it cranked fine, sounded almost but not 
quite normal on cranking.

I found the belt quite by accident, felt like a damn fool.
